Chili Bowl VII and Elvis Gospel Concert

Next Sunday, January 31, is Chili Bowl VII at 5:30 PM in the Family Life Center, followed by a gospel concert by “Elvis” (Kraig Parker) at 7:00 PM in the Sanctuary! Chili Bowl is an annual event where the whole church comes together and tests our best chili recipes!  Entertainment provided by First Church String Band!! Everyone is welcome to participate - whether you enter the contest, or just come eat! We'll have a new category called "It's Not Chili" and hot dogs will be available for the kids. Get full details on the Iron Men web page.

This years beneficiary is Weekend Food; all proceeds will go to this ministry. Weekend Food is a program which provides 350 children per week with a bag of supplemental food for the weekend. We would like to ask that you donate any of the following Weekend Food needs:  individual packs of: easy mac, ravioli, ramen noodles, applesauce, fruit cups, pudding cups, breakfast bars, instant oatmeal. Bring your donation with you to the Chili Bowl. Get more details about Weekend Food here.

After the Chili Bowl, join us in the Sanctuary for an incredible gospel concert by Elvis impersonator Kraig Parker and the Royal Tribute Band! The event is free and no ticket or RSVP is required - just show up and enjoy the show! Doors open at 6:00 PM and the concert starts at 7:00 PM.

Career Transition Ministry

Many of us, especially in this time of economic turmoil, are looking for employment or interested in improving on a current career path. The FUMC Career Transition Ministry is here to support anyone looking to improve their current employment situation. We offer discrete one-on-one assistance with such things as resume preparation, making a job search plan, interviewing techniques and general career advancement. The Ministry will be hosting networking meetings beginning in 2010 focused on a variety of career transition topics. The Career Transition Ministry volunteers have experience in career counseling, human resources, technology, finance, business and sales. For more information, contact katherineh@fumcg.org or visit our website at http://firstmethodistgrapevine.org/caring/career.html for resources and leads to additional job transition groups.

News to Change the World

Help for Haiti
We continue to keep the people of Haiti - and all those who are helping there - in our prayers. We received word earlier this week that two of our United Methodist leaders - Rev. Sam Dixon, head of UMCOR, and Rev. Clint Rabb, head of GBGM Missions Volunteers - have both died as a result of their injuries when the Hotel Montana collapsed around them during the earthquake. You may support the relief efforts by writing a check to the church and indicate “Haiti” in the memo. You may also give online to Advance #418325 at www.umcor.org. In addition, we are providing health kits for UMCOR. Bring your assembled kits to the table (outside the church office, in the sanctuary foyer - both Heritage and Downtown, and the Founders Chapel atrium) by MONDAY, FEBRUARY 1. We will be taking them to be shipped along with others from North Texas churches. Detailed instructions on assembling the kits are available on the “Help for Haiti” flyers in the foyer brochure racks and on our website - or click here to download a PDF of the flyer.

A Note From Nathan
Parents, I would like to share a media resource with you called, Common Sense Media. I subscribed several months ago and have followed its content. What I found were great articles, like this week's feature entitled, "Kids' Shocking Searches: What You Can Do." It is a report from Google letting parents know what are the most searched items for children. The newsletter also has carefully-considered movie, book, and music reviews for parents who want to know about content and messages their children receive from electronic media. Check out this week's question of the week in the ASK COMMON SENSE section. The question relates to how parents can help their children deal with the tragic events that are part of daily news. We will run a link to this site in the Children's Ministry section of E-News and on our website. Please check it out and share your thoughts and ideas. God bless your family!

Recaps, Gifts, Thanks, Photos, etc.

Children's Home in Waco Sends Thanks
Dear Dr. Diehm and Congregation:
For the past 21 years your congregation has faithfully given bicycles to the children of Methodist Children's Home. A simple thank you is not enough to express our gratitude for the difference your generosity has made in the lives of our children and youth. Many of our children come to us battered and scarred by wounds from their past. Some of our youth have never experienced the pleasure and freedom of childhood. Your gift of bicycles allows our youth to rediscover a sense of childhood joy. Over the past two decades you have ministered to thousands of our youth. We are humbled by your tradition of giving. Please pass on our heartfelt thanks to Scott Kanaga for organizing the logistics of the donation. We would also like to thank Alan Molnar for use of a Darryl Flood Movers truck. As our young people embark on a new year with their new bicycles, they do so knowing that they are supported and loved by this ministry and our many friends at First UMC Grapevine. Thank you!
Trey Oakley
Vice President of Development - Methodist Children's Home

Youth Ski Trip Recap
We took 42 youth/adults to Crested Butte, Colorado this past weekend. It was a wonderful trip! We came home with a couple of minor injuries and a ton of memories. Everybody that we came in contact with raved about our youth. They were very well behaved and respectful. I (Jenny) am very proud of our youth and look forward to our ski trip next year! Click here for the full photo album.
