Give a Great Mother's Day Gift!

Mother’s Day is coming up Sunday, May 9! We are offering you a unique gift-giving opportunity. Honor your mom this Mother's Day by helping another mom! Every week, individuals come into the church office asking for assistance with rent, utilities, gas, food and other basic necessities. A single mom with four children coming out of an abusive marriage needs help with rent and the electric bill. She was involved in a car accident, so she's unable to work right now. Can we help in any way? With your help, we can! Our Benevolence Fund has helped 55 families so far in 2010. Over half of those were women, and 90% of those women were single moms. Your Mother's Day gifts this year will go to the fund that is used to meet these needs, called the Benevolence Fund. Simply write "Moms" in the memo of your check. If you'd like a card to give to your mom to let her know about your gift, there are some available in the church office and at the Welcome Center in the Sanctuary Foyer.

Also for Moms...

Moms are invited to join their child(ren) in Sunday School on Sunday, May 9, for Muffins for Moms! Come celebrate Mother's Day at 10:00 AM in your child's Sunday School classroom. You will be treated to yummy muffins and some fun crafts!

Family Fun Walk & Health Fair

We will be partnering with GCISD to hold a Health Fair for local students and their families on Saturday, May 15. The event will begin at 8:30 AM with a fun walk starting at Cross Timbers Middle School and ending at Grapevine High School, where the fair booths will be set up. The fair will include all kinds of fun activities for kids, information for parents, and screenings for blood pressure, triglycerides, etc.

We will support the fair through providing volunteers as well as collecting and then distributing toothbrushes (adult and children) and toothpaste to the fair participants. We've been told that in some local families, the children have to share a toothbrush! We will be collecting toothpaste and toothbrushes for the next two Sundays (May 2 and 9) in order to distribute them at the Health Fair. We hope to collect 300 children's and 200 adult toothbrushes. Look for receptacles in the foyers, atrium and outside the church office. We will have a booth at the fair where we will distribute the dental hygiene items and provide information to the community about our outreach programs.

In addition to your toothbrush/toothpaste donations, we need volunteers! We have been asked to help provide volunteers for all aspects of the event... from setting up the day before to manning the parking lots... checking people in to tearing down at the end. If you would like to be a part of this special community event, please sign up on Check-In online or in this Sunday's bulletin. Questions? Contact Sandra Nasr at snasr41@hotmail.com

News to Change the World

Needs of the Week
This week's top needs:

STILL NEEDED: Bedding for a full-size bed.

NEW NEEDS:
Good walking shoes size 8 1/2 wide for an elderly diabetic woman.
4 x 6 area rug to lay beside the bed of an elderly neighbor.

Contact Bev Campisi at beverlyc@fumcg.org to help with any of these.

What If
Lately we’ve been asking ourselves, “What’s next?” What big thing can we do to reach out to people in need? The Compass Team met over the course of several weeks to discuss these questions and dream about the possibilities. The result is a four-part initiative to help our children and youth gain a global perspective and change lives in Kenya, Costa Rica and right here in Grapevine. Please visit our website for more details. If you would like to be involved in these planning stages, the next gathering coming up is:

Children/Youth Village: Tuesday, May 11, 7:00 PM in 2007 (Family Life Center)

Kenya Needs
We have a mission team going to Kenya this summer, departing on June 16. They will be carrying six suitcase of items to be used in their work. They are also collecting money for items that will be purchased in Kenya. We are looking for the following donations:

  • 6 large used suitcases that will be left in Kenya

  • Used adult clothing - suits, dress shirts and ties

  • 45 watches (These can be new or used. If you purchase a watch, please purchase an inexpensive watch.)

  • Donations to provide 250 T-shirts for each AIDS orphan. Please make a donation of $5 for each t-shirt you wish to give. Mark on your gift that the money goes to Kenyan t-shirts.

  • Donations to provide blankets. Please make a donation of $5 for each blanket you wish to give. The blankets will be purchased in Kenya. Mark on your gift that the money goes to Kenyan blankets.

  • Ink pens

Project Read Summer Reading
Project Read is once again partnering with GCISD this summer to provide support to struggling readers. The district Summer Reading Program will be held at Timberline Elementary June 7- July 2 . The program will run Monday through Friday with four possible time slots per day. Join Project Read in this great, short-term opportunity to serve the Ministry Mile this summer! Parents and teens are also welcome to work as a team to provide support to the children. Just choose a day of the week and time that fits your schedule to help us serve the community! Sing up on Check-In online or in Sunday's bulletin Questions? Contact Joan O’Brien (jobrien2000@msn.com or 817-329-6649).

Go Green - Donate Electronics
We are still taking your donations of used electronics to benefit Justice For Our Neighbors (JFON). Acceptable electronic gadgets include cell phones, digital cameras, MP3 players/IPODs, camcorders, gaming consoles, PDAs, GPS devices, graphic calculators, laptops. The items will be delivered to a local recycling company for sale or disposal. Proceeds from any sales will go to support JFON ministry. JFON provides free, high-quality immigration legal services, education and advocacy. You may drop your donations off at the receptacle outside the church office, in the sanctuary foyers (both campuses) and in the Founders Chapel Atrium.

God Can for GRACE
Bring your non-perishable food items for the GRACE pantry to the designated bins in the Sanctuary Foyer, Founders Chapel Atrium and outside the church office. GRACE's needs right now are: Cooking Oil, Kid's Cereal, Diapers (size 5), Laundry Detergent, Canned Peaches, Canned Pineapple, Juice (orange, apple, etc.), Spaghetti and Sauce, Sugar (4lb. bags).

Mission Green Tip of the Week: Recycling Unusable Clothing
There is a fairly large percentage of discarded clothing that goes into landfills. Donated clothes deemed too far gone even for wearing are actually collected from many charities by textile-recycling operators that use them for material in the rag business. These companies separate cloth by various grades, cut out unusable accoutrements like buttons, and box and bale the material. Thus, castoff clothes end up wherever rags are sold or used, from hardware stores to boat bilges to hazardous-waste cleanups. One rag maven was proud to tell how her company sent massive amounts of old cloth to soak up the notorious Exxon Valdez spill in 1989 and to absorb toxic substances in the aftermath of the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans. Who says the fashion industry doesn't do anything for the planet?
