The groups will make sure that parking is available for all church activities on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Your patience and cooperation are appreciated as always!

Pastoral Appointments Announced

New appointments have been announced for pastors in our church and around the conference. Rev. Randy Scrivener, currently our Heritage Campus Pastor, will be moving to become the pastor of First United Methodist Church of Hewitt. Randy has served Heritage for five years. His final Sunday will be June 13.

Rev. Louis C. Carr Jr., a native of Fort Worth, has been appointed as an Associate Pastor at First Methodist Grapevine and will serve as the new Heritage Campus Pastor. Louis is married to Mrs. Kenyail Carr of Grand Prairie and they have a beautiful daughter Peggy. Louis is a Provisional Elder in the United Methodist Church and serves on various conference and district committees. Louis received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Prairie View A&M University, where he played football and golf. He also completed his Master of Divinity from Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University. While at Brite he became the first African American elected student body president in the history of the school. Louis has served various churches in the Central Texas Conference. He served as youth director at Saint Andrew’s United Methodist in Arlington. Ken was the pastor of SAUMC while Louis served as youth director. He left SAUMC to become the pastor of St. Luke UMC in Mexia. The church doubled in size during Louis’ tenure. He is currently serving as the pastor of St. James UMC in Waco.

All of our other pastors - Dr. Ken Diehm, Rev. Rick Mang, Dr. Cindy Ryan, Rev. Nathan Firmin and Rev. Armando Alvarado - have been re-appointed to continue serving here.

Donate Your Talents!

Do you have professional skills and talents that would be valuable to people in need? Many times our requests for assistance are monetary in nature, but another way you can help people is through donating your time and talents. In this Sunday's bulletin, we will include a survey about your talents and skills. If you are willing to contribute your professional talents, skills or advice to individuals in need, we ask that you take the time to complete this survey. A list will then be compiled so that we may match needs with individuals in our congregation who can help. For example, if the church hears of someone in need who has a clogged sink, instead of paying for a plumber or asking members for cash, we could check the list and email the plumbing group and see if anyone can try to help. We appreciate your participation in this new endeavor!

Blankets of Hope

This Sunday, our Ministry Moment focus is on Blankets of Hope. Blankets of Hope began in 2007 with two people that wanted to reach out to individuals who were struggling with substance and alcohol abuse. Many volunteers stepped forward to help create blankets that were then delivered to the residents of Valley Hope, a substance abuse treatment facility in Grapevine. We have delivered over 600 prayer-covered blankets to Valley Hope since 2007. It takes many people to keep this ministry going. Some donate fabric, others sew, some cut fringe, some take part in every step, and everyone prays for the recipient as they do their part. The words that we all pray are also printed on a card and attached to each blanket as a reminder that there are people who don’t even know them, “that care that much.” If you would like more information about Blankets of Hope contact Cheri Rutledge at cherir@fumcg.org or Jan Parrett at swinefamily@tx.rr.com

News to Change the World

Needs of the Week
This week's top needs:

STILL NEEDED:  2 tires for a 2002 Honda Accord; small radio; funds toward hearing aids

NEW NEEDS:
toaster oven
a person who might like to help a neighbor organize her bills and cards
an eye exam
eye glasses for a person who has a prescription already

Contact Bev Campisi at beverlyc@fumcg.org to help with any of these.

Justice For Our Neighbors and Children's Health Insurance Program
On Sunday, May 23, we will have two informational gatherings to help us further understand how we can help our neighbors in need. Justice For Our Neighbors (JFON) will be here from 3:00-4:00 PM and Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) will present from 4:00-5:00 PM, both in Leach Hall. Amy Spaur, Administrator for JFON, will present "Immigration 101" to help explain how our immigration laws work. There will be time for questions and answers at the end of her presentation. The CHIPs presentation will explain about Medicaid for children. Texas leads the nation in the number and percentage of uninsured children. The group will be trained in how to register kids for CHIPs. Childcare will be provided for both sessions. Questions? Contact Rev. Armando Alvarado at armandoa@fumcg.org for JFON or Lisa Jones at jones2131@msn.com for CHIPs.

Kenya Needs
We have a mission team going to Kenya this summer, departing on June 16. They will be carrying six suitcases of items to be used in their work. They are also collecting money for items that will be purchased in Kenya. We are looking for the following donations:

Ink pens

Watches (These can be new or used. If you purchase a watch, please purchase an inexpensive watch.)

Donations to provide blankets. Please make a donation of $5 for each blanket you wish to give. The blankets will be purchased in Kenya. Mark on your gift that the money goes to Kenyan blankets.

Feed Our Kids
We will be participating in the Feed Our Kids program the week of July 12. There are some open dates and locations that GRACE is still trying to fill. Sunday school groups or others are welcome to participate. Open dates are: July 5-9 at Regional Place Apartments; July 5, 6, 8 and August 16-20 at Shady Oaks Trailer Park on Scribner; spot days may be available at Kings Street. If you would like to help, contact Deb Scheiwe at debscheiwe@verizon.net

Project Read Involvement in Feed Our Kids
Project Read has been invited to partner with the Feed Our Kids program this summer by providing books to the children in the community. Volunteers are needed to go to pre-determined sites on Tuesdays from 11:45 AM to 12:45 PM for all eleven weeks of the Feed Our Kids program (June 7-August 18) to hand out books and connect with the children. You can choose as many weeks to serve that fit your summer schedule. This is a great opportunity for parents and children to work as a team to serve the Ministry Mile this summer. For more information contact Joan O’Brien (jobrien2000@msn.com or 817-329-6649).

God Can for GRACE
We collected 64 items for God Can last week.
Bring your non-perishable food items for the GRACE pantry to the designated bins in the Sanctuary Foyer, Founders Chapel Atrium and outside the church office. GRACE's needs right now are: Cooking Oil, Kid's Cereal, Diapers (size 5), Laundry Detergent, Canned Peaches, Canned Pineapple, Juice (orange, apple, etc.), Spaghetti and Sauce, Sugar (4lb. bags).

Mission Green Tip of the Week: Seek Green Variety
Anybody who claims vegetables are boring should visit a Mediterranean country. On Crete, where people have the longest life expectancy in the world, they eat twenty-six kinds of wild plants. Yet we're stuck with 3.5 million tons a year of iceberg lettuce. It takes thirty-six calories of fossil-fuel energy to grow and ship one calorie of iceberg lettuce. "We might as well be shipping baggies of water back and forth across America," says author Bill McKibben. For alternatives, consider easy-growing arugula, endive, chard, chicory, dandelions, mustard, radicchio, collards, kale and Italian parsley, or at least romaine lettuce.

The group will meet one week day in June for 1.5 hours on a date to be determined by the group. Childcare will be provided. If you would like to participate, contact Joan O'Brien at  jobrien2000@msn.com or Cindy Ryan at cindyr@fumcg.org

Evening Precepts Bible Study Interest
We are considering an evening Precepts Bible Study class and looking to see who might be interested. The Precepts Inductive Bible Study method studies the text of scripture first and refers to the work of others second. It takes you directly to the Bible as your primary source using a straightforward investigative approach. Individual time is spent observing Scripture to know what the Bible says, using principles of interpretation to understand what it means, culminating in personal application. Weekly homework is included in this study. It's a very rewarding experience! Contact Nancy Johnson at pajnaj@verizon.net or 817-424-0297 for more information or to indicate your interest in this class. Day, time and location will be determined based on the needs of those who express an interest.

Top Ten Reasons Parents (or anyone!) Should Teach Summer Sunday School:
10. Small people will hang on your every word.
9.  Easy, low or no prep lessons.
8.  Tasty snacks.
7.  Fun music during BigTime, our large group session.
6.  A nifty teacher nametag.
5.  You get to meet your child’s church friends, who are way cool.
4.  We supply all the training and materials you need to succeed.
3.  Your child gets to see you in a role of spiritual leadership.
2.  The teaching schedule is flexible. We welcome your help as many Sundays as you can give.
And the number one reason...
1.  God is giving you an opportunity to make a difference in the life of a child by pointing them towards Jesus Christ!

VBS Volunteers
We have a long list of volunteer needs for Vacation Bible School.  We need "Commanders" who are responsible for guiding children to the different VBS stations. Preschool Commanders will also be responsible for some teaching time in the classroom. We also need Bible storytellers, craft station volunteers, and kitchen help during the morning session. In the kitchen, we need help in the following two areas: Preparing snacks for the children during VBS hours and/or assisting with the daily lunch for VBS staff from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM. If you'd like to help with any of these areas, please sign up on Check-In online or in Sunday's bulletin. Please also make sure you fill out a Volunteer Form so that we'll have all the information we need. Updates, Recaps, Gifts, Thanks, Photos, etc.

Gifts Given
A gift has been given in memory of Jonathan Smith by Claudia Street.

Weekend Food Thanks
We received the following note from a parent at Bear Creek Elementary:
Thank you very much for the "snack" back packs on Friday. Each time Joanna brings it home all the kids (especially her) are excited. All three want to know "what's in it this time." What a blessing! As a mom I appreciate any help I can receive. I am also grateful for the fact that the snacks are healthy and the apple-a-day thing is a great touch!

Spring Into Missions Thanks
We cannot begin to express our gratitude for your graciousness to our school. We love our new picnic tables and our box to hold outside PE equipment! Our desks and chairs are sturdy and clean as well! Bless you for your generosity!
In His Service,
Melissa McGowan
Principal, Accommodated Learning Academy
[Note: These projects were undertaken as a part of the Spring Into Missions day on April 24.]

Update on Peru Comedor Project
Sulam will be traveling from Ecuador to Peru on May 25, and hopefully construction will start within a few days of her arrival. Her goal for the house/comedor was roughly $4,000 and it has been met! The flower sale and donations from both campuses of FUMC Grapevine raised about half of that goal. There was no money for appliances included in the $4,000, so if you would still like to contribute you may do so online. Thank you all for your generosity... your gifts will be so beneficial to the Santa Rosa community in Peru and to Sulam’s family.

The Well with Jennifer Strickland
On May 6, 280 women and teenage girls joined together for a night of fellowship, good food, and an insightful message. We were surrounded by 35 beautifully and uniquely decorated tables complete with full service by the men of our congregation. Jennifer Strickland, former supermodel, shared her testimony about finding her inner beauty in Christ and how beauty should be from the inside out. It was truly a night for women, and we were all blessed to be together. Click here to see the entire photo album.

GCISD Health Fair
Last Saturday, members of the church participated in supporting GCISD with its first annual Fun Walk and Health Fair at Grapevine High School. The request for 500 toothbrushes and 500 toothpastes to distribute to families attending the fair was surpassed. A total of 1,258 tubes of toothpaste and 1,479 toothbrushes were collected for the Health Fair. Many of these items were distributed at the fair, those remaining will be distributed within our ministry mile. Approximately 30 volunteers from the church were on site supporting the Health Fair in various capacities. On behalf of myself and GCISD, a heartfelt thank you for supporting this effort in all the ways that you did. I am proud to be a part of FUMC Grapevine. The community speaks highly of our church family and the many outreach opportunities that we provide.
